Although on this tour we bicycle on asphalt road from the beginning to end, it does not mean that completing the tour will be an easy task. Riding on a road bike (racing bicycle) is not recommended, due to the bad quality of the roads.
The starting point of the tour is the narrow gauge railway station in Mátrafüred. We highly recommend taking a ride on this train, but don’t forget to check out the timetable beforehand. If you do not wish to take the train, you can take a comfortable ride on the bike road leading along main road 24, from the railway station at Gyöngyös to Mátrafüred.
From the narrow gauge railway we start out in the direction of the Kékes peak, and firstly ride on the main road 24 for a short distance (5 km).
About 2 km-s after Sástó we turn left and continue on an asphalt forrest road, staying on this road all the way during the uphill part of the trip. Orientation is quite easy with the help of a map. Keeping an important rule – when arriving at an asphalted, T-shaped intersection (there will be 2 of them), always turn left – helps find the Galyatető-Pásztó main road even without using a map.
Once reaching this main road, we turn left and head toward Bagolyirtás on a road varied with smaller uphill and downhill slopes. About 1 km after Bagolyirtás there will be an asphalted forest road to the left (of a bit bad quality, though not filled with pot-holes), on which we ride to the Károlytáró housing estate.
From here we ride down to Gyöngyös, via Gyöngyösoroszi. We return to our starting point on route 24.
